East Africa

The book covers some of the most spectacular parts of the world for wildlife in the world.  The plains of the East Africa are famous across the globe for their iconic species.  Elephant, lion, giraffe, cheetah, leopard and the few remaining black rhinoceros.  But Travels of a Conservationist - East Africa' doesn't just cover the plains megafauna, it includes less-well-known species; those that are threatened with extinction and are found in remote locations.

Read about the second largest bat species, living on two islands in the Comoros, just off the coast of Mozambique and the efforts to stop the destruction of their forest homes.  Read of the only penguin found in Africa, and how to find them new homes. And how Mozambique is bringing back its wildife, after the dreadful civil war of the 1990s.

It is a book that describes the importance of working with different tribespeople such as the Massai of Tanzania, and the Batwa of Uganda.  And how ecotourism has changed the way that the East African countries use their wildlife.  East Africa gives hope that people and wildlife can live together, to the benefit of both.

Oh yes, and there are quite a few laughs as well, including the story of Neil trying to find a place to wash out of the curious gaze of several scores of village children, determined to see if he really is 'white all over'. Or realising that the 'empty snake hole' actually wasn't empty.
